We are delighted to announce that Dr. Aubrey de Grey has accepted our offer to join the LEAF scientific advisory board, and he joins the other luminaries whose expertise we already benefit from.

The majority of you already know about Dr. Aubrey de Grey and his work at the SENS Research Foundation, but for those who are not familiar with him, here is a short introduction.

Reimagine Aging

Dr. Aubrey de Grey is the Chief Science Officer and co-founder of SENS Research Foundation. He received his BA in Computer Science in 1985 and his Ph.D. in Biology in the year 2000, both from the University of Cambridge; his Ph.D. was awarded for his book “The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging”.

Besides his work with SRF, Dr. de Grey is the Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Rejuvenation Research, is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association, and sits on the editorial and scientific advisory boards of various journals and organizations.

He is perhaps best known for co-writing the book Ending Aging with Michael Rae, also from the SENS Research Foundation, and is considered one of the original proponents of the repair based strategy for treating age-related diseases.

Dr. de Grey proposed that aging is comprised of seven distinct forms of damage and that by developing therapies that directly address that damage, we might prevent, delay or even reverse age-related diseases.

Originally, the ideas of Dr. de Grey were heavily criticized by many established experts in the aging research field, but as time has passed and the data have increasingly begun to support his repair-based approach to aging, attitudes have changed.

Indeed, many academics who were once critical of Dr. de Grey’s approach now work with him, and the field is seeing a shift to repair-based approaches to aging. One of the more obvious examples of that is the highly respected Hallmarks of Aging, which itself shares a similar repair-based approach to aging and was almost beyond a doubt heavily influenced by the work of Dr. Aubrey de Grey.

Conclusion

We have previously worked with Dr. de Grey and the SENS Research Foundation on two successfully funded projects, MitoSENS and OncoSENS, which were both hosted at Lifespan.io, and it is great to once again be working with them.

We are very pleased that Dr. de Grey has joined our scientific advisory board and the wealth of experience that brings. We rely on the expertise of our advisors to help guide our scientific endeavors, and having Dr. de Grey, one of the greatest advocates of rejuvenation biotechnology, supporting us means a great deal.
